12/30/2017  · KURNELL – TABBIGAI CLIFF DWELLERS Tabbigai Cliffs, located about 1km south of Cape Solander, were home to men such as Bert Adamson, Gordon Donovan, and Sid James, who have left a record of their experiences. They lived there, happily, from the 1920s until their cliff houses were demolished in 1974.


Tabbigai Cave Dwellers near Kurnell in the 1930s.They started to occupy these cliffs from the 1920s until the cliff houses were demolished in 1974.They were not squatters but paid an annual fee to the Lands Department and they also paid council rates.A?W.

Kurnell became a popular area for fishing from the 1880s. From the 1920s it was well known for the cliff dwellings of Tabbigai near Cape Solander which were occupied by fishermen. Camps and humpies were also established in areas such as Boat Harbour in the depression years. Road access was difficult made up of a series of dirt tracks.


Burt Adamson at his cave house on the cliffs behind Kurnell .Burt has lived on the cliff since 1917.The Cliff – Dwellers of Tabbigai must go – and that may include Bert Adamson, the grand old man of the Kurnell .

Like at La Perouse, the Kurnell section of Botany Bay National Park had a shanty town. This was established in the cliff overhangs and caves overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Cape Solander and Tabbagi Gap. The earliest dwelling was built in 1919 and others were constructed during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
